USDC and CCTP are now live on OKX’s X Layer, offering regulated stablecoin functionality and cross-chain interoperability for DeFi and payments.

Circle has launched native support for USDC and its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) on X Layer, OKX’s Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible Layer-2 blockchain. The move introduces regulated stablecoin infrastructure to X Layer, potentially boosting adoption for payments, DeFi protocols, and cross-chain transactions.

USDC, Circle’s dollar-pegged stablecoin, now enables dollar-denominated payments, lending, and borrowing on X Layer. The integration also brings institutional-grade on/offramps via Circle Mint, deepening USDC’s presence in OKX’s trading ecosystem, which boasts over 120 million global users. According to Circle, the addition of USDC and CCTP aims to reduce fragmentation across blockchains by facilitating seamless cross-chain liquidity and settlement.

    Native USDC vs Bridged Versions

Prior to this launch, X Layer supported only a bridged version of USDC (USDC_Bridged), which was transferred from Ethereum but not natively issued by Circle. With native USDC now live, OKX plans to transition liquidity from the bridged version to the native token over time. For users, this means access to Circle-issued USDC, fully backed by dollar reserves and redeemable 1:1 for USD.

Importantly, the native integration aligns X Layer with other major blockchain networks where USDC is natively supported. As of May 2026, Circle reported USDC’s presence on 34 blockchains, making X Layer a late but significant addition.

    The Role of CCTP

CCTP allows developers to move USDC efficiently between X Layer and other blockchains that support the protocol. This interoperability is a key feature for projects requiring multi-chain liquidity or cross-chain settlements. By leveraging CCTP, X Layer developers can secure a competitive edge in DeFi and AI-native workflows where seamless asset transfers are critical.

    Market Context and Competition

USDC is currently priced at $0.999658 (as of August 7, 2026) with a market cap of approximately $72.96 billion. This positions it as the second-largest stablecoin by market capitalization, trailing only Tether’s USDT. However, USDC’s focus on regulatory compliance—such as adherence to MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) standards in the EU—gives it a unique appeal for institutional adoption.

OKX’s decision to integrate USDC comes despite its earlier announcement in May 2026 to disable USDC as a trade currency for certain spot pairs. The addition of native USDC to X Layer suggests OKX is prioritizing its utility as a settlement and liquidity tool within its ecosystem, particularly for DeFi and institutional-grade applications.

    What’s Next for X Layer?

Launched in April 2024, X Layer has positioned itself as a high-performance Layer-2 solution for Web3 applications. By adding USDC and CCTP, OKX enhances X Layer’s appeal for developers and businesses looking for scalable, interoperable infrastructure. The move could also help attract liquidity to X Layer’s DeFi ecosystem by enabling USD/USDC trading pairs with lower slippage and deeper reserves.

For businesses, Circle Mint offers institutional on/offramps to convert into USDC on X Layer, while individual users can access the stablecoin through OKX’s exchange and wallet services. Developers interested in leveraging USDC or CCTP can access open-source documentation via Circle’s platform.

As the competition for Layer-2 dominance heats up, X Layer’s adoption of USDC could serve as a differentiator, aligning its ecosystem with the liquidity and compliance standards demanded by enterprises and institutional traders.
